Symbols, Liquid Boolean and Rigging Update

Alright, 0.10.1 is here and this is a big one. We spent most of this cycle on three things: symbols, liquid boolean shapes, and rigging, and honestly all three needed the attention.

The big change on the symbols side is that one symbol now means one symbol. Edit its artwork, timing, or playback and every copy in your project updates with it, however deeply nested. Group markers are now real variants with live previews, and a symbol can be a Graphic or a Movie Clip depending on whether it should scrub with the timeline or run on its own.

Liquid boolean shapes got a full rebuild too. Subtract, Intersect and XOR finally blend at the seam the way Union always did, each piece of a group can carry its own operation, and the whole thing now runs on the GPU during playback.

Rigging got a lot of love as well. Poses hold correctly whether you're posing by hand, through IK, or with dynamics, and scaling or rotating a rig no longer leaves the bones behind while the artwork moves on its own. If you've been fighting with any of that, this update should feel like a relief.

On top of all that, painting is faster, exports on heavy scenes stay responsive, and camera depth of field finally follows the camera the way it should. Full list below.

New and improved

  • One symbol updates every copy of itself across the project, however deeply nested
  • Group markers are now variants with live previews in the Variants panel
  • Graphic and Movie Clip playback modes for symbols, like Flash
  • Time Remap, Ping Pong and Hold for symbol playback
  • Subtract, Intersect and XOR now blend at the seam like Union always did
  • Each part of a boolean group can carry its own operation, no more nesting required
  • New Elasticity and Blend Weight controls for liquid boolean blends
  • Liquid boolean blending now runs on the GPU during playback and scrubbing
  • Raster layers, images, groups and symbols can now take part in a boolean group
  • Save now spreads artwork compression across several CPU cores
  • Copying shapes now writes real editable vector data to the system clipboard

Fixed

Symbols

  • Hand poses no longer lost on symbol copies or during idle background prerender
  • A posed bone stays posed instead of snapping back to its keys
  • Undo no longer drops you out of Edit mode
  • Renaming or duplicating a symbol no longer merges it with another by mistake

Liquid boolean

  • Blended seams no longer wobble or reshape frame to frame
  • No more CPU spikes from an animated liquid boolean group sitting idle
  • Blend radius and elasticity now apply correctly past a certain size

Rigging and bones

  • Scaling or rotating a rig no longer leaves bones behind while the artwork moves
  • Target bones now follow their parent correctly during a live drag
  • IK Strength, Ignored-by-IK and stretch limits now hold beyond the chain's reach
  • Bone dynamics settings no longer reset to defaults on reload
  • Welding nodes together no longer detaches whatever was bound to the absorbed point

Performance

  • Painting with the vector brush no longer spikes the CPU as a stroke gets longer
  • Selecting or moving a complex shape no longer stalls the app
  • Exporting a heavy scene no longer freezes the window for long stretches

Other

  • Depth of field now follows the camera and no longer stops at a straight edge
  • Camera Depth is continuous and actually does something in the standard setup
  • Various fixes to menus, shortcuts, keying and interface wording

Full patch notes are below.

Celas Studio 0.10.0 - Drawing, Fill and Rigging Update

Alright, 0.10.0 is here and this is a big one. We spent most of this cycle on three things: drawing tools, fill and rigging, and honestly all three needed the attention.

The big change on the fill side is this: it can now read line art from one layer and apply colour on a completely different layer. So you can colour freely without ever risking your line art. On top of that, gap closing no longer messes with your line art in ways it shouldn't, it just seals the gap you meant. Expand also fills in a real circle now instead of a blocky square, which sounds small but changes how clean your linework looks after every single fill.

Rigging got a lot of love too. Mesh deform finally follows bones the way it should, static handles behave properly, and IK chains don't whip around anymore when a handle bone sits inside them. If you've been fighting with any of that, this update should feel like a relief.

On top of all that, Pixel Mode is up to 7 times faster, toolbars no longer clip or hide your buttons when the window gets narrow, and the Graph Editor got a proper pass with box select and duration control built right in. Full list below.

New and improved

  • Drag a scrollbar by its ends to zoom that axis, in the timeline and both graph editor bars
  • Graph editor: drag a box to select several keyframes at once
  • Graph editor: the duration bar is there too, so the range can be set without leaving it
  • Graph editor: Linear, Smooth, Sharp, easing and interval all apply to every selected keyframe
  • Hold Alt and drag a keyframe to leave the original where it is and drop a copy
  • Copy Keyframe copies every selected layer at once, and Paste puts each layer's keys back on its own layer
  • A copied keyframe now carries the style, effect and bone-parameter keys that sit on it
  • Pencil and brush strokes come out as smooth curves with far fewer points
  • The brush tool options fit on screen: compact value boxes and a "more" button
  • Tool options carry the brush stroke: draw a line as a brush line, and convert what is selected
  • The pencil shows the brush stroke while you draw it, not after you let go
  • Pencil can draw into the current layer instead of making a new one per stroke
  • 12 new Sky Gradients
  • The fill tool can read other layers, so line art on one layer can be coloured on another
  • Fill can close gaps in line art instead of flooding past them, by joining the two stroke ends on either side of the break
  • Fill can expand under an anti-aliased line so it leaves no pale outline
  • Fill on a vector layer can produce a vector shape or pixels
  • Clicking inside an unfilled closed shape now fills it
  • New layers can go above, below or inside the selected layer, whether you add one or draw a shape
  • Layers panel: the layer toggles are left-aligned instead of floating in the middle
  • Every tool bar reworked: compact value boxes, icons and even spacing
  • Tool options no longer run off the edge of the window
  • A boolean group can be switched between Union, Subtract, Intersect and XOR from the toolbar, and given a blend radius
  • Marquee and Magic Wand: each amount sits with the buttons that use it
  • The eraser no longer offers a new-layer choice it never used
  • Properties: Blend sits under Opacity
  • Camera moves and zooms now show up in exported files
  • Camera Zoom is keyframeable, with its own timeline track, graph curve and auto-key channel
  • The knife cuts pixel drawings in two along the line, on any brush (scattered and textured included)
  • The knife line is red, and turns green the moment it would actually cut
  • Hold Alt and drag a layer with the Move or Transform tool to leave a copy behind and drag the copy
  • A duplicated layer lands directly above the layer it was copied from

Fixed

Fill and gap closing

  • Gap closing now seals only the actual break, without merging separate shapes or eating thin lines
  • Fill no longer bleeds past line art or leaves pale edges under anti-aliasing
  • Expand fills in a true circle instead of a blocky square
  • Narrow slivers behind a closed gap now fill correctly
  • Fill dragging is much faster, especially on large canvases
  • Contiguous fill now works correctly on vector layers
  • Gap distance is now measured in the actual width of the break, up to 64px, not an arbitrary radius

Mesh deform and rigging

  • Mesh cages now follow bone-bound artwork correctly instead of staying at the bind pose
  • Mesh vertices can be selected, bound and unbound like any other point
  • Mirror Weights now works on meshes
  • Auto Weight no longer overwrites hand-painted weights on unrelated layers
  • A mesh now follows the correct rig when multiple bone layers exist

Bones, static handles and IK

  • Static handles move correctly with their parent bone and stay visually accurate
  • IK chains with a handle bone inside them no longer whip or lag
  • Keyframing a handle bone no longer breaks its parenting
  • Bone list now clearly shows bone type and selection colour

Fill, stroke and colour

  • Setting fill or stroke to "None" now sticks properly
  • Colour picking with the pencil no longer swaps slots unexpectedly

Layers and duplication

  • Duplicate and Paste now place copies exactly where expected, without unwanted offsets
  • Duplicating a group or bone layer no longer nests it inside the original
  • Layer toggles for hide, lock and alpha-lock apply to all selected layers at once

Toolbars and UI

  • Toolbars now collapse extra buttons into a menu instead of clipping or hiding them
  • Overflow menus behave correctly, no flicker, no reappearing, no running off screen
  • Number fields now reject invalid input instead of silently discarding it
  • Tooltips wrap instead of stretching across the screen

Timeline and Graph Editor

  • Vertical scrollbar direction and zoom indicator fixed
  • Graph editor opens framed correctly and fits both axes
  • Easing and interval now work on bone curves

Pixel Mode

  • Up to 7 times faster playback
  • No more softened edges or flickering line weight between frames
  • Grid visibility now follows the View menu setting

Selections

  • Selections now hold their own transform instead of moving the whole layer
  • Smudge and Deform work correctly inside an active selection
  • Selections survive layer and frame changes, and saving

Edit and Animate mode

  • Switching modes no longer loses strokes, bindings, fills or poses
  • Rigging tools are now properly Edit mode only
  • Edit mode no longer creates unwanted keyframes

Camera and export

  • Camera zoom now scales from the correct pivot
  • Camera moves now appear correctly in exported files

Performance

  • Faster undo and playback on documents with many layers
  • Faster textured brush strokes and long timelines

Other

  • Various crash fixes and interface translation corrections in Turkish, Russian and Chinese
